History
Mirissa was a small fishing village for most of its history, and fishing boats still share its harbour with whale-watching and tour vessels today. It only became known internationally as a whale-watching destination from the mid-2000s, after marine surveys — some conducted in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, which struck this coastline hard — confirmed that blue whales and sperm whales pass close to shore here on a fairly predictable seasonal migration. That discovery, combined with the beach's sheltered curve and a small rocky headland known as Parrot Rock at its eastern end, turned a quiet fishing settlement into one of the south coast's most visited towns within about a decade.
