Ambalangoda
The home of Sri Lanka's traditional mask-making.
Why Visit
The best place on the island to see traditional mask carving in progress and understand the folklore behind it.
A coastal town on the way to Galle, long known as the centre of Sri Lanka's traditional devil-dance mask carving.
History
Ambalangoda's mask-carving tradition is tied to the Sinhalese low-country's ritual healing and folk-theatre practices, particularly Kolam (a masked drama tradition satirising social types and retelling folk stories) and Thovil (exorcism and healing ceremonies intended to drive out the malevolent spirits believed to cause illness), both of which are thought to draw on folk-religious traditions older than the island's mainstream Buddhist institutions. Specific carving families in and around Ambalangoda passed the craft down across generations, each mask carved from lightweight kaduru wood and painted according to strict traditional colour and form conventions tied to the specific character or demon it represents. For centuries these masks were made purely for functional use in actual ceremonies and performances rather than as souvenirs, and the town's workshops and small museums today preserve both the objects and the oral traditions — the specific chants, dances and stories — that go with them.
