History
Like much of the coast between Colombo and Galle, Ahungalla was a coconut-growing and fishing area for most of its history before international beach tourism arrived in the later 20th century. Its growth as a resort destination followed the same pattern as neighbouring Bentota and Induruwa — large hotel properties built along an already-quiet stretch of coastline, drawn by a wide beach and water calmer than more exposed parts of the coast. The area was affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as was the entire southwest coastline, and has rebuilt in the two decades since.
